HeatWave

A soft, comfortable, flame-retardant polyurethane foam underlay.

Comfort and Support – HeatWave provides a soft material to enhance comfort underfoot, making sure the surface of your carpet has its softness enhanced. Polyurethane foam construction also offers enhanced performance in structural stability, meaning that it’ll keep your carpets fresh in look and feel for longer.

Fire Safety – HeatWave is the king of flame retardants amongst underlays. Our PU flame-retardant foam is designed to resist flames, acting as a barrier against fire. This is through the flame retardant foam being enhanced with chemicals that resist heat.

High Durability – Heatwave is made from the highest quality recycled polyurethane foam, capable of withstanding heavy foot traffic with its impressive density. Not only will the underlay last a long time, but it will also protect the carpet from impact damage by bearing the brunt of the force.

Anti-fire, pro-underfloor heating – Heatwave has a Tog rating of 1.2, meaning it offers low-level thermal insulation despite its anti-fire properties. This also means, however, that the underlay is compatible with Underfloor Heating.

Clean – HeatWave filters dust and is considered a highly hygienic product, great for those who are concerned for their respiratory health.

Generally, flame-retardant polyurethane foam is a type of foam that has been treated to reduce flammability. During the manufacturing process, chemicals such as water vapour and carbon dioxide are baked into the fabric, being released during high-temperature situations to prevent ignition or slow down the fire.

For our own HeatWave Underlay, other chemicals will work to enhance these effects on the surface of the polyurethane foam into a protective barrier named an “intumescent char layer”. This protects the layers beneath it from oxygen through its closed-cell structure, and from heat by increasing thermal insulation once the intumescent char layer begins to form. This also means that if the HeatWave Underlay ever does for an intumescent char layer, it would remain and provide increased insulation for its lifecycle. This also means, of course, that any underfloor heating beneath it would lower in effectivity.

Airflow has a significant role in how it interacts and affects the performance of the flame-retardant foam. Good airflow can enhance the insulation properties of the foam by ensuring an even distribution of temperature, whilst an insufficient flow can cause the opposite. Of course, with HeatWave, the effects of this are minimised due to the superior construction of the underlay.

Several groups enjoy the benefits of flame-retardant foam underlays:

  • Homeowners – Homeowners who are concerned about fire safety within their homes can opt to use flame-retardant foam underlays to reduce the risk of fire spreading. This is particularly interesting in the case of families with elderly or young children.
  • Property Developers and Builders – Many property developers use underlays and other modular materials to meet ever-increasing, developing fire safety regulations.
  • Hospitality Industries – Inns and other buildings that serve as temporary dwellings use flame-retardant foam underlays in guest rooms, corridors and public areas to enhance fire safety.
  • Commercial property owners – Commercial properties that work with a lot of electronics, such as office buildings and shopping centres, can use flame-retardant polyurethane foam to protect their assets.

Healthcare Facilities – Alongside flame retardants, these places often use clean underlays that filter dust and other such pollutants.

Our Heatwave underlay is designed to meet key safety standards set out by the UK Government. The two biggest are:

  • BS 5808 – The British Standard for Carpet Underlays. This underlay complies with the standard, covering the performance requirements for underlays in terms of not only low flammability, but also its durability and thickness. With this standard, you can ensure that your carpet underlay is not only long-lasting but also reduces the risk of fire spreading.
  • Flame Retardant Standard – HeatWave Underlay is made to meet fire safety regulations surrounding flame retardants, of which there are many. With HeatWave, however, you can be assured that you will have one of the highest-performing underlays on the market.

Our UK and Ireland operations are run from our large distribution centre just a short distance from our Head Office in Liverpool.
