Generally, yes. If we break this down into several facts, you will be able to see what we mean:

  • Materials – 12mm underlays are often made from dense PU foam or sponge rubber. These are considered some of the most comfortable underlayment options on the market.
  • Luxury Feel – Your carpet will look a lot better with the stable evenness that comes with a 12mm carpet underlay. On top of that, however, there is a substantial difference in the feel of the carpet, making it feel as plush as a luxury carpet.

That being said, there is one caveat:

  • Overly Soft – Pairing a 12mm carpet underlay with a carpet that is naturally plush may overdo it. It could lead to a feeling of sinking into the floor, which can be both unbalancing and, ironically, uncomfortable.

There are several carpets for which a 12mm carpet underlay would be beneficial including:

  • Thin to Medium Pile Carpets – These carpets are typically known for being fairly thin and dense. This means that they’re not always so comfortable. However, when paired with a plush 12mm carpet underlay, they are transformed into a carpet that is both very comfortable, but also hardy.
  • Carpets for High-Traffic Areas – Carpets are some of the weakest flooring options, and can wear out quickly in high-traffic areas. A 12mm carpet underlay is perfect for these areas, provided they are also fairly dense, such as PU foam.

A 12mm carpet underlay beneath heavy furniture can give several benefits that aid the room, such as:

  • Support – The cushioning that 12mm carpet underlays provides offers support for the floor, ensuring that the heavy furniture’s weight is distributed evenly across the room.
  • Reduced Indentation – There are often marks on unsupported floors from heavy furniture and most of the time these marks will indent for good. A thicker underlay can lessen this.
  • Furniture Movement – The movement of furniture across the ground supported by a thick underlay reduces the chance of damage to your carpets, though we’d still recommend lifting to avoid dragging heavier furniture across the carpet surface.

Bear in mind that, as with all underlays, material matters. Dense PU foams and rubber offer the best results in areas where floor compression is a concern.

Typically, no. The reason is simple: heat transfer. The more material heat has to pass through, the harder time it generally has. Whilst it’s technically possible to get results, you’d have to go with a floor that has a low tog-rating. Tog ratings mark the level of insulation an underlay (amongst other items) has, the higher it is, the more insulation it provides.

The issue with this is that 12mm carpet underlays are made with comfort primarily in mind. This means having more material to cushion your feet. If anything, an underfloor heating system with a barrier this thick may just damage your heating system so it’s best to proceed with caution.
