Product FAQs

  • What is your fibreboard underlay 7mm range made of?

What is your fibreboard underlay 7mm range made of?

Our fibreboard sheets are made of traditional natural wood fibre, made up from softwood trees like pine and spruce. Our board is bonded together without the need for additional glues or resin, providing exceptional thermal insulation whilst resisting compression, making for solid and stable support underfoot.

  • What types of final floor covering is a fibreboard underlay 7mm suitable for?

What types of final floor covering is a fibreboard underlay 7mm suitable for?

A final floor covering is the topmost layer of the floor in a building, typically what your feet/shoes are touching when you walk inside.

The following are the types of floorings that fibreboards are suitable for:

    • Solid Hardwood Flooring – A fibreboard’s wood fibre makeup creates microscopic pockets of air that act as shock absorbers, reducing the stress of the hardwood joints. When the wood expands and contracts, the underlay compresses and allows for movement.
    • Engineered Wood Flooring – The density and thickness of the underlay creates a stable support foundation for engineering wood, which can protect against possible plank separation or the formation of gaps over time.
    • Laminate Flooring – Only certain thick laminate flooring types with a robust locking system are compatible with fibreboards, but those that are can enjoy the locking mechanism being reinforced. Laminate is cold, and very cold subfloors can exacerbate this issue, but with fibreboard underlays, you’ll find that much of the cold has been blocked by heat insulation.
  • Are fibreboard underlays the same as laminate underlays?

Are fibreboard underlays the same as laminate underlays?

Fibreboards are well-suited to be used as an underlay for laminate and wooden flooring, with matching laminate underlay suitability in that regard. That being said, they are not the same.

    • Fibreboard Underlays – These are made up of natural wood fibre, and are 7mm thick, or below, depending on which option you choose. Offering stable support through their density, they are durable enough to provide extra strength to real wood and engineered wood flooring. They are also, however, compatible with thicker laminate flooring that has strong locking mechanisms.
    • Laminate Underlay – Laminate underlay is made up of foam, and is typically thinner, ranging from 2mm to 5mm. They have less density and are specifically designed for laminate flooring. Furthermore, laminate underlay typically boasts superior moisture resistance. This underlay is compatible with some engineered wood flooring types that have thinner planks.

When the two underlay options are considered for the same compatible flooring, consider whether or not you require moisture resistance. If not, fibreboard insulation and soundproofing will beat laminate underlay in most instances.
