TimberTech Underlay
QA Flooring presents the TimberTech underlay range, a premium selection of wood and laminate underlay that delivers high standards of noise reduction, moisture protection and underfoot comfort for your home.
The TimberTech underlay range is suitable for the following flooring types:
- Wood flooring – Compatible with wood flooring of all types, solid wood flooring, engineered wood flooring and more.
- Laminate flooring – Laminate flooring has many variants, but you needn’t pay for the premium moisture protection options with our Timbertech, which sports a silver vapour barrier to protect your flooring from moisture.
Our TimberTech range is suitable for both domestic and contract installations, and we have a varied range – here are some of our top sellers below:
- TimberTech Elite – TimberTech Elite is made up of PU foam and mineral components, offering a hard-wearing solution to ensure the stability of your floor. Its high density offers more than enough protection to keep your flooring as fresh as possible. Boasting a tog rating of 0.1, it is also compatible with underfloor heating, and blocks noise of up to 21dB. It comes with a silver vapour barrier, offering strong moisture protection against your subfloor.
- TimberTech Neo – TimberTech Neo is a thicker option, offering between 3mm to 5mm in comfort. That being said, this is still a hard-wearing underlay option, made of recyclable crumb rubber to ensure a sustainable, green solution. Neo has an acoustic variant that offers the highest levels of sound reduction in the series, up to 26 dBs. Comes with a silver vapour barrier on Neo, and a gold vapour barrier on Acoustic.
- TimberTech Gold – This premium ultra-thick rubber underlay is designed for commercial contract installations. It offers up to 23 dBs of sound reduction and is fully compatible with underfloor heating. Its gold vapour barrier keeps your floor dry to a much higher standard than silver, and it boasts an incredibly high density, by far the highest within the series.

Vapour barriers, regardless of whether they are silver or gold, both serve the same function in an underlay. Made of either polyethene (PE) sheets or foil, the gold or silver vapour barrier exists as an outer layer that is designed to block water from seeping into and through the material, thereby protecting your floor.
That being said, the main difference between silver and gold variants is their effectiveness. Gold is much more suitable for commercial installations, where its advanced composition reflects its premium status.
The best underlay for any flooring type is one that either defends the weaknesses of the floor or enhances the strengths. For wood flooring, you should choose Timbertech Elite or Neo depending on whether you have a lot of visitors or heavy furniture to protect your floor from. The reasons are:
- Moisture protection – Although engineered wood flooring has increased resistance against water, solid wood flooring is porous and moisture can cause warping, swelling and the development of mould. The vapour barrier will protect your flooring from the subfloor, which can hold moisture and only release it when pressure is applied (via footsteps).
- Sound insulation – Wood is a noisy flooring even without the creaking. Not only will TimberTech absorb sound within a room, but it will also keep it levelled and stable, preventing creaking in the first place.
- Heating – Under-floor heating is one of the most modern, cheap and comfortable heating options on the market. It’s a common application beneath solid wood flooring, so you’ll need to find an option that allows for this if underfloor heating is desirable at your home.
